Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our Treasurer, Andrew Micenko (treasurer@wacua.asn.au)

Hello everyone,
At the last committee meeting on 3rd November, the committee discussed the current budget, and the amount of the loss that is proposed for the financial year. We were all in agreement that $15,000 is an acceptable target to remain above, and that the loss this year is justified due to the preseason dinner falling into this year’s budget instead of last year’s. The current finances can be downloaded below.

So far for the year, our major expenses have been on social events including the preseason dinner, coming in at $3464. In the last month, we’ve paid $500 to Perth and Tatts for social memberships which enable us to use the venue for our general meetings. We’ve also had some more money come in for merchandise orders. I’ve contacted our supplier about placing an extra order, and am waiting to hear back from them regarding minimum order sizes. Finally, some money has gone out for the bar tab at the last general meeting ($121.50) and merchandise postage ($64.95).

With the WACA not hosting a test match this season, we’ve delayed the life members’ breakfast, and will look at incorporating it into one of our other planned events, with the grand final breakfast being the committee’s current preferred option. That means we have no other events planned for November, so there shouldn’t be many outgoings this month.

Our current balances are:
Cheque account: $1,239.99
Savings account: $14,382.90
Cash: $241.00
Total: $15,863.89

That about sums it up. As always, feel free to ask if there are any questions, or send an email to treasurer@wacua.asn.au. Thanks!

Committee Report – October 2020

Another season is here! Congratulations to umpires starting this season while still in the unusual circumstance that is COVID-19. I think from all reports we’ve handled it very well!

With our first General Meeting around the corner, we have our first committee update for you.

President’s Report

Here is the latest from our President, Trent Steenholdt (president@wacua.asn.au)

  • Annual Dinner 2019-20 – Thank you to everyone that attended the belated Annual Season Dinner for 2019-20 in September. We finally had it! Hehe! From the general feedback I have received, it sounds like everyone enjoyed the evening and the toughest quiz questions known to man. I want to thank the previous and current committees, in particular Ashlee, Ernest, Ahmad, Sean and Andrew for their work on this. You all made this a great evening.
  • Annual Reports – At the Annual General Meeting, we had an incomplete version of the Season 2019-20 available online. Now with all the awards given, we will create a second revision of the Annual Report and fix some issues that people reported. Expect an updated version by the end of October/ start of November.
  • Pay rates – This Season pay rates are consistent with last season. While the WACUA did ask for a slight increase in December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic made it very difficult to endorse an increase when sources of income for the WACA, like the Test Match were being cancelled.

I am happy to report though, as part of our updated MOU, match day cancellations from the 12:00 am (same day) are paid out in full. So if your match is abandoned on the morning of the day, you will be paid for your troubles planning your day around cricket!
  • Registration process – This Season saw our registration process change slightly for the WA Premier Cricket Registration Fee. The joint form has made our administration a lot easier, giving us more time to focus on things that are important to us. We appreciate that not everyone was convinced this registration would be a success, but it’s pleasing to know that our membership numbers are very much on par with what they were last season.
  • Merchandise – All merchandise ordered before 19 September should be ready in the next 24 to 48 hours (Tuesday, 13th October) and those paid for postage should get their items in the next few days. We, unfortunately, had a yet another disaster with Ace Promotions which ultimately has meant we switched providers very late in the order process. The good news is the new supplier has an excellent reputation and are very quick with their turn around times.
  • Sponsorship – This season we’re welcome back the Match Official System (by Cortana Design) to be our major sponsor, contributing $1000 into our bank account at Christmas time. We’re also currently working with MTA Travel (Nathan Johnstone) and the Bank of Queensland to seek additional sponsorship for this season and beyond.
  • Events Calendar – The events calendar at www.wacua.asn.au/events has been populated with all our events. We’ve already had one successful Back to Base Drinks, and we’ll have plenty more during the season so keep your eyes open.
  • Plans for this Season – The Season ahead will be one for providing normality in what is a crazy world at the moment. Memberships look very strong in terms of the ratio of active umpires at this stage, and we will continue to support the WACA in whatever way we can to help with recruitment and enticing more umpires to Umpire in Premier Cricket. With bio-hub matches likely for domestic and international cricket, it’s nice to know that local cricket remains relatively normal in these unusual times.

Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our Treasurer, Andrew Micenko (treasurer@wacua.asn.au)

Hi everyone, and welcome to the new season! I’ve created a rough budget for season 2020/2021, and invite you all to take a look below.

Since the AGM, our main spending has been on last season’s dinner, where we outlaid $2513.72 for the evening. We’re still planning on having an end of season dinner towards the end of this cricket season. The two dinners combined are the reason we’re forecasting a $3570 loss this financial year. Even with this loss, we should still remain above our target of $15000 in the bank.

On top of the preseason dinner, we’ve also had some money spent on merchandise, the seminar social drinks and our first back-to-base for the season. Merchandise payments have been coming in directly, which is great!

As normal, we won’t see the majority of membership fees until the WACA’s December pay run. This leaves our current balances at:
Cheque account – $1848.22
Savings account – $14371.90
Cash – $213.00
Total – $16433.12

Thanks!

President’s Report

FEBRUARY ALREADY! Where has the Season gone! I hope everyone has been enjoying themselves with the hot weekends we’ve been having.

  • Annual Season Dinner. Please RSVP now at https://www.wacua.asn.au/event/annual-season-dinner-2020/ to confirm your attendance. Guests are also welcome (please RSVP for them) for $30.00 AUD, paid to our bank account.

The night is on Saturday, April 4th at 6:30 pm for a 7 pm start. I’m happy to inform that we’ve secured the services of David ‘Crystal’ Clear as our MC (special kudos to Wayne Barron for sorting this) so as you can see, this night will once again be a step up from last seasons. This is our night of night, so please do come along.
  • T20 Match – Pencil date, Sunday, March 1st. Subject to some last couple of hoops, I’m happy to inform that the T20 game should be a go for Sunday, March 1st at Kent Street High School. Please keep an eye out for the email invite that will go out for this in the coming days!
  • Co-branding merchandise for Season 2020-21 with the WACA. The Committee has been working closely with the WACA and their merchandise provider BLK to explore the possibility of co-branding with both off-field and on-field uniforms next season. This includes a wider change embarked by the WACA to standardise the on-field shirts to one colour for all formats other than two-day Senior Men’s first grade (e.g. Default blue shirt with white for two-day red-ball cricket in the first grade only). Much of this is still early days but early indications look promising with merchandise being completed all online and posted to people, removing a common problem for members unable to get their merchandise. More on this in the coming weeks and months.
  • MOU (for Season 2020-21) finalisation for WACA review. A final draft of the MOU for Season 2020-21 has been worked on with the WACA and is now with the WACA for their internal review processes. Much of the MOU for season 2020-21 remains unaltered except for some formatting and grammatical changes. In summary, some of the changes are:
    • The WACA Registration Fee Process remains unchanged, albeit some formality changes for our Life Members still umpiring which are entitled to a refund.
    • More clarity on supplementary group umpires, essentially those individuals that are casual.
    • Rewording around the WACA financial support, to remove the limit of $1500 AUD. The Annual Season Dinner this year is an example where the WACA themselves are contributing more than this amount.
    • Matchday payment if the match is cancelled by the WACA on the day of the match.

A review of the WACA Registration Fee will be completed following the Annual Dinner, as prescribed by the current MOU, and will be taken to the members at the next Annual General Meeting.

Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our treasurer, Andrew Micenko (president@wacua.asn.au)

Hi everyone,
It’s been a quiet month on the treasury front. People are starting to pay for their guest tickets to the annual dinner, which is good to see. We also had a few more merchandise sales at the last committee meeting. Apart from that, we’ve had the usual raffle takings and bar/BBQ costs from the last general meeting.

I’ve attached the finances document below for your viewing. As you can see, we’ve got $19,581.42 in the bank. Summing up the expected costs for the annual dinner, Olly Cooley night and Karen Read medal night comes to $4550. So with these expenses plus the other smaller events that are remaining in the year, we should be able to stay above the $15,000 mark by the end of the association’s financial year.

Happy umpiring!
Andrew

President’s Report

Firstly, Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a lovely break and enjoyed time with friends and family. The second half of the season is now in full swing and it won’t be long until Season 19-20 is coming to a close!

Here is the latest from our President, Trent Steenholdt (president@wacua.asn.au)

  • Golf Day instead of T20 Match – Thank you to everyone that participated with the Golf Day at Wembley. It was a small group but it was fun nevertheless! The T20 game is still on the cards and we’ll try to organise this to be played in March. Watch this space and thank you for your patience on it.
  • Annual Season Dinner

RSVP to confirm your attendance now! https://www.wacua.asn.au/event/annual-season-dinner-2020/ (view bottom of the page)

As you should know by now, the dinner this year is included in your WACA registration fee and is on Saturday, April 4th, 6:30 pm for a 7pm start. You can also bring your partner along for only $30, which is great value for money when considering they’ll leave the evening full with a two-course meal and a small gift on behalf of the association.

The Annual Dinner this year will be an improvement on the last; much like each seasons dinner has been in this generation. Included this year on top of last year will be:
    • bar tickets for a first free drink.
    • a Master of Ceremonies to run the entire evening.
    • more special goodies for the raffle and table quizzes.
    • the presentation of Grand Final Medals and the announcements of umpire of the season for all the various grades and competition.
  • General Committee works update – The committee has been working very hard behind the scenes to refine and improve our processes, not only for this season but also into next season as well. Included in this is some work on the Peter McConnell Medal criteria, the potential of merchandise co-branding with the WACA, the MOU for next season, Life Membership nomination guidance (no change to actual process) and review of our awards and medals. More will come about this in the coming weeks and months so once again, watch this space!

Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our Treasurer, Andrew Micenko (treasurer@wacua.asn.au)

Happy new year everyone! I hope you all made the most of the short break. I managed to get over to Brisbane and the Gold Coast for a week to spend time with family.

I’m happy to report that we’ve received all the membership fees from people who nominated to have theirs paid out of their WACA umpiring payments. We received $5940 for 108 members who elected to pay this way.

Since the last meeting, we’ve also had the golf day where we provided a prize and a bar tab to the tune of $269.29. We also had a small number of merchandise payments at the last meeting – thank you. I’d also like to thank Bill Reynolds for his kind donation to the association at the life members’ lunch.

As far as the budget goes, to stay above our target of $15,000 in the bank we now have $4,400 to spend for the rest of the season. Most of this ($2,875) will go towards the annual season dinner. We also have $1200 budgeted for the grand final breakfast. The money we make from tickets to those events should cover the other costs that we have for the year, such as the Olly Cooley and Karen Read medal night subsidies and further events such as back to base drinks and bar tabs at the February and March general meetings.

Here are the current numbers:
Cheque account – $7,058.21
Savings account – $12,230.29
Cash – $136.35
Total – $19,424.85

If you’d like to see my spreadsheet of all the current income and expenses, it’s attached below.

President’s Report

  • Life Members Luncheon – Thank you to everyone that RSVP’d for the luncheon. This year was unique with Perth hosting its first day-night test match so the format may be a little different again this year. If you have any suggestions on how to improve this, please contact the committee at secretary@wacua.asn.au.
  • Pay rates for next season – The pay rates for Season 2020-21 have been submitted to the WACA and have been accepted. They are subject to budgetary approval but the proposed rates would be:
  • T20 Match – The T20 Match is still on and is scheduled for Saturday 28th December 2019, subject to ground availability. This year we’re hoping to play on Turf at Kent Street Senior High School thanks again to my father, Val Steenholdt who is the curator. More information about this will come out separately from our committee reports so keep your eyes open for it!
  • MOU for Season 2020-21 – The Committee met with Alan Johanson and Daniel Gibbons for a very productive discussion about the MOU and how we would like to collaborate next season. Some of the items on the table are:
    • Wording and grammatical fixes.
    • Refinement of the registration process for WA Premier Cricket when an umpire is a WACUA Life Member.
    • Annual Season Dinner arrangements, including discussions for this years event including a great suggestion from Wayne Barron with awarding grand final umpire medals on the evening of Dinner rather than at the end of the days play.
    • Co-branding for off-field uniforms.
    • WACA’s suggested changes of on-field uniform apparel

The MOU for Season 2019/20 remain unchanged of course. Stay tuned for more news about the MOU for Season 2020/21.
  • Events Calendar – The events calendar at www.wacua.asn.au/events has been populated with all our events. Please make sure to book out your own calendars for events that you’re entitled to come to for free like the Annual Season Dinner (4 April 2020).

Committee Report – October 2019

Another season is here! Congratulations to everyone on a great pre-season, the effort you have put in thus far. The season from all reports kicked off really well and that’s credit to you.

With our first General Meeting around the corner, we have our first committee update for you.

President’s Report

Here is the latest from our President, Trent Steenholdt (president@wacua.asn.au)

  • Pay rates – This Season we’ve had yet another increase in our pay rates thanks to a much tighter working relationship with the WACA. Much of this can be attributed to the transparent process that’s outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding. The pay rates for season were available in the WACA Umpires Handbook that was handed out at the Season launch event.
  • Merchandise – All merchandise ordered before 19 September is ready for pick up at our first General Meeting. We’ve had some fun with the wrong colours being ordered, thankfully a vendor error. This season we’ll have just Shirts, Jackets and Caps. Bags while very popular and all sold are only a once every couple of seasons item.
  • Sponsorship – This Season we’ve had a change of our major sponsor. Firstly I want to thank Mick Martell and the Perth Metro Property Group team for saving our bacon the last decade. We owe many thanks to them for our existence today, mainly when merchandise was the only source of income that was keeping us relevant. This season we’re welcoming the Match Official System (by Cortana Design) to be our major sponsor, contributing $1000 into our bank account. Not a great deal changes operationally for the WACUA with the change in sponsor, except new merchandise does have the MOS logo. All merchandise matches the same design as last season, so there is no need to update your Perth Metro Property Group kit. If anything, we still want you to wear Mick’s gear with a lot of pride!
  • Events Calendar – The events calendar at www.wacua.asn.au/events has been populated with all our events. Please make sure to book out your own calendars for events that you’re entitled to come to for free like the Annual Season Dinner (4 April 2020).
  • Hat bands – There has been much excitement around the WA Premier Cricket hat bands and them being embroidered with the Senior Men’s First Grade numbers. The hat bands are an excellent joint initiative from us and the WACA, and we’re very grateful for Alan Johanson and his team for allowing us to have a small part of the on-field merchandise. Currently, hatbands are only available to active Premier Cricket umpires, and while I appreciate that will frustrate a few, this is purely a logistical decision. The hatband is, after all, a WACA item that they ordered which we then took to our embroiderer to get done. Only enough hatbands were ordered for actively umpires and with us Life Members (as a gesture of their service to us).
  • Plans for this Season – The Season ahead will be a busy one for us. We’re looking to take our social events to the next level and build our close working relationship with the WACA. The benefits of which we already see with things like the hat bands and financial backing.

Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our Treasurer, Andrew Micenko (treasurer@wacua.asn.au)

Hello everyone, and welcome to the new season! I hope everyone enjoyed the opening round.

We kicked off the season with our first event back in August, which was the post-seminar food and drinks at the Grosvenor Hotel. It was great being able to chat with Simon Fry well into the evening! Turnout was a bit better than expected which resulted in us making the executive decision on the night to increase the budget for the event from $300 to $500. It was good to see so many people there!

Once again the plan for the overall budget is to spend a bit of the cash reserves that we have, dropping from the $15721.57 that we started the financial year at to $14775.57. This is the plan only at this stage, and is liable to change. If there are any concerns with this please feel free to come and talk to me, or raise it at our general meeting.

Finally, I will be paying for the merchandise order this week, so there will be a drop in our current balance. I’d ask anyone who’s ordered merchandise to pay for it ASAP. Thanks!

Here are the current numbers:
Start of the association’s financial year: $15,721.57
Current balance: $16,132.19 ($1,749.62 in the everyday account, $14,182.57 in the savings account, $200 in cash)
